Up into the 18th Century, the kilt was a practical garment, not the decorative "man-skirt" it has become in modern times. It was made of a large quantity of thick wool and could serve as tent, sleeping bag, wind break and rain cape. Given Scotland's wet climate and the outdoor lifestyle of the highland shepherds and drovers, kilts often got wet, but was it common for highlanders to get their kilts wet deliberately in dry weather as one English visitor claimed? Two modern Scottish bushcrafters put the plausibility of this to the test.
