It sounds like one of those Motorola Surfboard modems, or their successors. I was forever having problems with mine, when I lived at Croydon. Even tried using the USB port instead of Ethernet port. Evetually they replaced it with a different one. Try calling out the technician. Is your phone landline bundled by the same provider? Maybe dial 150 or 151 and get them to replace the cable modem. Virgin Media (or Telewest as it used to be) can't cope with its huge customer base.
