Definitely +10 to everything Levi said, in today's MeToo world, Consent is key. Read the room, and don't be aggressive or creepy. I'm pretty shy and reserved but forget about all that and usually have a good time. Larger events are better, a small-town one-pit-playground everyone knows everyone but you, so unless you've got charisma it'll be awkward. Bigger events, no one knows anyone or cares. I've had fun either joining people say warming up for a game, or after the game if a team is lingering after and playing around. There's also the good Samaritan approach, catch an out of bounds ball, lend a hand to someone stepping out of the pit, etc.
