No real definition of what is "acceptable," on a mud-run. Suits/costumes, CAN be fun, but they can also really add weight as you get wet, and can complicate going through some of the obstacles, so plan/dress accordingly. Also dress for the weather, if a hot day, you don't need a lot, knee protection is good. If a cold one, an extra layer or so is a good idea.
I often wear a nylon t-shirt w/shorts, and polypropylene underneath if weather is cooler. Good shoes/hiking boots are key, they clean up better than you think, it's only dirt & water after all.....
Here are a few mud-run tips.
1.) If there are timed "waves," sign up for the latest one you can. Let the achievement-based runners stir up the mud for you, and leave you room to take your time/enjoy it.
2.) Bring a COMPLETE change of clothes
3.) Bring a jug of water, and a couple extra towels for clean-up.
4.) If you like to "go under" like I do, earplugs are key.
MudRuns are one of few times where others will ENCOURAGE you to "go for the mud," so make the most of that.
