River football

On the last Monday in August in the UK, an unusual event takes place in the picturesque village of Bourton-on-the-Water in Gloucestershire. The village is a popular tourist destination that is known for its stone buildings and the fact that a river flows alongside the main street.

Two local football teams compete in a 30-minute long football match which is played actually in the river, which is no more than about 12 inches deep. The event has been running for over 100 years and is watched by hundreds of spectators. Photos are often published afterwards in the local and national press and sometimes there are videos on YouTube. The event was called off in 2020 and 2021, but resumed again in 2022.

The competitors play wearing their normal football kits, including regular underwear. This year there was a bonus, as one of the teams wore full yellow football strips.

Despite the shallowness of the cold river, all players got fully wet either by being splashed or falling in the water. Their yellow kits turned totally transparent, fully revealing their underpants, which in most cases were dark boxer briefs.

Nothing about this was ever mentioned in the official news articles, but the spectators were able to enjoy the sight of a team of young men running back and forth in clinging see-through shorts displaying their soaked underwear.
