I’m just too lonely to be able to sustain any emotional bond in someone’s absence, and I’m too broken to be able to let her in any further: I cannot present myself as a burden on her soul.

It was only her unwavering friendliness that opened the crack in my shell; I would never approach anyone in that way unless they initiated something, and she was the only person to have ever done so.

I never expected such a response and now I find that I cannot live up to being the glimpse of me I shared with her. It was all the real me, but something I lose every time I’m alone.
